A cost-efficient light version for end users.
In most corporate environments, there will be people outside IT who are fairly adept at manipulating data in a spreadsheet, or even accessing corporate data with a desktop-style database using ODBC. KeepTool Light will let them go even further in polishing their querying and analysis skills, using the same interface as their IT colleagues running the Professional or Enterprise Edition of KeepTool.
In fact, when it comes to building and organizing queries and manipulating the results, KeepTool Light is not light-weight at all. Instead of asking your development staff to run a query and export it to Excel, they can now execute that query against the database itself and refine it until it shows exactly what they need. Do they need to join two tables? The Data Browser shows them the relationships, and the SQL Builder constructs the join for them, letting them select columns, sorting and filtering criteria.
Even less sophisticated users can take a load off your developers, since they will be able to run standard queries any time they want.
Data Contents Browser
The Data Contents Browser makes it easy to find and analyze the data that you need to focus on in a table or view.
Once you open a table, the Browser provides basic filtering and sorting capability — no need to add WHERE and ORDER BY clauses and run multiple versions of the query — the Browser’s graphic interface does it for you. You can also group results by one or more columns and generate group totals for numeric amounts.
By examining foreign-key constraints, the Browser can easily take you to corresponding rows of related tables.
What’s more, if you’re familiar with the process of rearranging data into pivot tables in Excel, you’ll find that you can do the same thing within the Browser–eliminating the need to export your data before manipulating it.
Just as you might write an idea on a blackboard, look it over, try it out, make it better and run it again, SQL Scratchpad makes it a simple matter to run a one-off query or to save and organize SQL commands and PL/SQL blocks. If an error is detected, it’s a simple matter to link to the Oracle documentation if necessary, then fix the mistake and run it again. Output from SELECT statements appears in a grid that’s ready to export. DBMS_OUTPUT appears in its own window, from which it can be saved to a file. You can even use the code window to build and run a script with SQL*Plus commands.
Once your code is working the way you want, saving it is automatic once you switch to another node in SQL Scratchpad’s navigation panel. Each root node equates to a drive location that you or your project team can assign.
SQL Scratchpad appears in all KeepTool additions and accommodates a range of purposes — from simple queries to organizing a collection of DBA scripts.
Throughout your enterprise, you probably have people used to viewing, sorting, and filtering Microsoft Excel workbooks to support business decisions. KeepTool’s Data Export facility will effortlessly generate an Excel or CSV file from a SQL query, table or view. Share it with your end user and tweak it if necessary. It’s a simple matter to regenerate the query and re-create the file, limiting the amount of manipulation left for them to do.
Likewise, you can apply a host of options to format a report or a chart and publish that as a PDF file that can be circulated as an email attachment, or an HTML page that can be uploaded to your web server.
